Modern motherhood has taken a toll on our lives: busy lifestyles, multitasking have left little to no time to look after our skin which is slowly drying, getting more sensitive and prone to breakouts. These changes can really affect confidence and self esteem yet we still don’t have the energy to even make a start and build a routine.
As a mum of two toddlers, skincare routine was the last thing on my mind and as a result I have started to see fine lines, white hair and breakouts at the age of only 26. Skincare for me felt like a luxury or another chore in my already packed schedule. However, one day I sat down and reflected in my journal. I told myself that I cannot continue like this. There has to be a way to look good whilst also being a super busy mum. I researched, read books and talked to friends and came up with a very simple skincare routine which I followed consistently. I saw big results within days and was amazed by how simple and budget friendly products could make a huge difference on my appearance.
I learnt that a simple skincare routine does not only provide physical benefits but also offer little moments of peace amidst the family chaos. This simple and straightforward skincare routine order that I have put together is fast and easy and helps busy mums achieve beautiful healthy skin in no time, without feeling overwhelmed.
Simple Skincare Routine Order -
Step by Step
STEP 1 Cleanser
Purpose: Removes makeup, dirt and oil from the skin
Use a gentle cleanser to remove impurities and prepare your skin to absorb the following products. Make sure to choose a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type: gel cleansers for oily skins, cream cleansers for dry and sensitive skins.
STEP 2 Toner
Purpose: Balances the skin’s pH and preps it for further treatments.
While toners can be skipped, they provide an extra boost of hydration to your skin. Aim for an alcohol free toner such as rose water or aloe vera which better soothes the skin.
STEP 3 Eye Cream
Purpose: Addresses puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines.
The skin around your eyes is delicate, so it’s essential to use an eye cream. Gently tap a small amount around your orbital bone to help hydrate and target specific concerns.
STEP 4 Moisturizer
Purpose: Locks in hydration and nourishes the skin.
Moisturizers help keep your skin hydrated and create a barrier against environmental stressors. For daytime use choose a moisturizer with SPF to simplify your routine even more. Remember to choose the right moisturizer for your skin type- lighter gels for oily skin and richer creams for dry skin.
STEP 5 Sunscreen (Morning Routine Only)
Purpose: Protects against UV damage.
In the morning, finish your skincare routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30. This is a critical step for preventing premature aging and protecting your skin from harmful UV rays.
STEP 6 Retinol (Evening Routine Only)
Purpose: Reduce appearance of wrinkles and enlarged pores
Complete your evening skincare routine with a small drop of retinol to unclog pores and increase collagen production. Make sure to check the product on a small part of your skin to see whether you are allergic to the ingredients.
